Three Top Hair Tips For Your Maternity Photo Shoot

The what to do, and not to do for your upcoming Gold Coast Maternity Photography Session!

What will I do with my hairrrrrrrr...........??

Up? Down? Sideways? I'll tell you what has worked best in the last 11 years of photographing new mothers below.

Tip Number One : KISS

My best overall advice for styling your hair on your big exciting maternity photoshoot day is to keep it simple, sweetie.

Overdone up-do's with lots of hairspray can end up to be a nightmare. Especially with maternity and newborn photography in the Gold Coast. Why? Weather, children, wind.

I have had many maternity photography sessions where the wind suddenly took a turn and was blowing everyones hair, well everywhere! When your hair is sprayed down to an inch of its life - its very difficult to get it back into the right spot if it comes away. Which makes for difficult to fix and edit photos.

Tip Number Two: Keep it Clean

Clean fresh or day after washed hair with a bit of dry shampoo handy is by far the best kind of hair you can have on your photoshoot day. Oily hair doesn't move very well. It can sit flat on your forehead and go into sections almost.

I totally get what it is like to be 36 weeks pregnant and its a struggle to put your pants on let alone design the perfect photoshoot hair-do, but if you can ask your partner or a friend to help with a good wash, nice dry off and get some dry shampoo for the roots this will be gorgeous.

Tip Number Three: Curl & Straight

Honestly, there is a reason why you see so many maternity photoshoots in gold coast with mamas wearing their hair curly & long.

It really works.

The soft curl will also soften your face, allowing it to appear less rounded and frame your beautiful features perfectly. Curled hair also means I can give your hair a volume BOOST in photoshop to make it appear thicker and fuller naturally.

Straight hair is also beautiful, I do recommend bringing dry shampoo with you for the roots as adding volume here will really make your portraits pop. Often Ill have my clients throw their hair over to one side rather than straight parted down the middle.

BONUS TIP: If it is windy, we can throw your hair up into a ponytail which will give your photos a bouncy look or go full wild woman and let it whip around your face. Both give a gorgeous result!

So remember Mama,

  1. Keep it Simple

  2. Keep it Clean

  3. Keep it Curled / Straight

And leave the rest up to me!
