When my daughter was a baby, I didn’t get my own professional baby photos of her, or us together. Nine years ago, the Gold Coast newborn photography scene wasn’t as big or diverse as it is today - and I was just starting out learning the ropes, taking photos of other mamas and their babes.
This week while I was editing my mother and daughter photography session, I felt really really sad that I didn’t get take the chance to have some photos of myself with her. In fact, the only maternity photos I have to look back on are over processed phone selfies.. I only wish I had some glamorous maternity photos and some polished high quality professional family pictures of us together. I was so busy being her mama and honestly? The thought of getting some beautiful photos of the two of us just didn't really register.
Why? Because I was too worried about how I looked, had other things I had to think about, I was taking heaps of lovely photos of her so I kinda thought I had captured that moment. In the moment, you are not thinking of much other than getting through each day.
Fast forward nine years ahead, and gosh do I regret not hiring someone to take photos of us together. Imagery I would be really proud to hang on my wall - and most of all leave it up there to love and admire for the years to come.
But amongst this genuine regret, what I did find was my why. Why I will advocate that professional photos with your child, no matter what age is important. Why I will make sure my mama's feel and look beautiful in their photos. Why you have to be in the photos in the first place. You need to be seen! Seen in a way that makes you feel beautiful as well.
People say photography is a luxury, and yes - it is. But I would give give up any expensive item I own for just a few beautiful professional photographs of my baby bump or with my girl as a baby. Don’t miss your chance, is all I’m trying to say. When you hear people say they grow up so fast - they do. The stages in between your newborn baby, to older newborn baby, to sitter {6-8 months}, to one year old have such a short window to capture.
Certainly making up for lost time now though, and I have to pay her $6 a session to have a photo with me! #worthit x Sera
